Over time, contracting your facial muscles in order to smile, frown and/or furrow the brows will cause lines and wrinkles to develop. These are especially noticeable around the eyes and mouth, between the eyebrows and on the forehead. Dermal fillers and Botox® injections are the most popular cosmetic procedures amongst men to reverse the effects of aging. The good news is that Male Plastic Surgery Los Angeles offers many non-surgical face improvements including Botox® and dermal fillers for men who want a youthful yet more masculine appearance.
What is Botox®?
BOTOX® is made from a highly purified protein, Botulinum toxin, that is very safe when administered by a trained physician. The medication relaxes the muscles in the face that cause wrinkles. After it’s injected, Botox is able to block certain nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. As a result, the muscles relax and wrinkles are no longer able to occur. BOTOX® treatments can prevent you from deepening facial lines during natural movements and also erase signs of aging, leaving you looking younger and refreshed.
What are Fillers?
Dermal fillers are an injectable gel consisting of both naturally occurring and synthetic substances. One of the most common compounds is hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in the body’s own fluids and tissues. Dermal fillers can be used to reduce the appearance of unwanted lines and wrinkles, increase volume in the lips and cheeks, diminish scars, restore hollow under-eyes or lift the brows.

How Does Botox® Work?
BOTOX® works by reducing muscle activity around the the eyes, eyebrows, forehead, mouth and neck. While other injectables push wrinkles out, Botox targets specific areas with small doses in order to “freeze” the muscle and prevent it from causing further fine lines or wrinkles. BOTOX® may also be useful for migraine headaches, excessive sweating and eye and neck muscle spasms.
How Do Fillers Work?
Dermal fillers should not be confused with other injectable drugs such as BOTOX®. Instead of freezing the muscles in the face to reduce wrinkles, fillers help smooth the skin using a soft gel. This material is injected underneath areas of collapsed skin using a needle in order to “fill” folds, replenish lost volume and contour the face.
There are different categories of fillers, each with varying formulas:
Restylane is a hyaluronic acid-based filler that’s best used to smooth wrinkles or reshape facial contours in male patients. The most common areas for treatment are the lines between the eyebrows and the folds from the root of the nose to the angle of the mouth. With its unique ability to bind with water, Restylane offers the benefit of longer lasting results.
Radiesse is a synthetic filler designed to treat deep facial folds, wrinkles and hollowness in the mid to lower areas of the face. It can also be used on the hands or to hide veins. In addition, Radiesse stimulates the body’s own natural collagen supply which lessens as we age. When the injectable is administered, this filler formula lifts the skin and eliminates wrinkles.
Sculptra® counteracts lipoatrophy, a condition that results in the loss of fat beneath the skin. Sculptra® is injected underneath the deepest parts of the skin and can reverse volume loss in the cheeks, under eyes and fill in other indentations. It can also be used to smooth out wrinkles and stimulate the body’s own natural collagen production.
Voluma is a hyaluronic-based filler made from long chains of fibers that occur naturally in the skin. It consists of water, anesthetic and hyaluronic acid, creating a gel-like material. Voluma is best used to give the cheeks a fuller, more plump appearance.
Juvederm Ultra is hyaluronic filler, like Voluma, however it is primarily used to treat the lips. Juvederm contains lidocaine, a common local anesthetic, contained within it already, so an applied numbing agent is not necessary. Juvederm Ultra primarily treats facial wrinkles and increases lip fullness.
Volbella is hyaluronic-based filler. The primary difference between Voluma and Volbella is that Volbella is made of thin material, unlike Voluma which is very thick. This thinness allows for small, precise applications. Volbella is the best dermal filler for filling the skin under the eyes, and can also perfect lip lines.
Vollure is made of hyaluronic acid, although it contains much less of this compound than its counterparts. The gel is slightly different and somewhat more malleable than other materials. Vollure is primarily used to keep the soft tissues of the face plump. It smoothes out wrinkles and the folds around the nose and mouth.
Dysport works differently than dermal fillers as it is a BOTOX® treatment. Instead of injecting material into collapsed areas underneath the skin, Dysport temporarily stops certain facial muscles from moving. This forced relaxation reduces the appearance of forehead lines. The skin responds quickly to the treatment, and you’ll likely see a difference within just a few days.

What Is the Recovery Time For Botox®?
Patients are asked to be especially careful for the first 2 to 3 hours after receiving BOTOX®. However, the entire procedure takes just 10 minutes. Following a treatment session, the injections start to work within 1 to 2 days and the nerves will be completely paralyzed after one week. Depending on the patient, the effects of BOTOX® can last anywhere from 3 to 12 months. Certain factors such as large amounts of exercise or overly expressive facial movements can cause the results to fade faster, so follow up sessions every 4 to 6 months may be advised.
What Is The Recovery Time For Fillers?
The full recovery time for fillers vary from patient to patient and also will depend on which filler formula was used and how much. Generally, patients are able to resume their normal daily activities immediately and the recovery process spans 1 to 2 days. In that time period, patients are advised to avoid vigorous exercise in order to allow the filler to settle into the skin. Following a treatment session, minor swelling and bruising is possible in addition to redness, tenderness and discomfort at the injection sites. These symptoms should only last a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Botox®
BOTOX® is ideal for men who might be entering a new stage of life, changing careers or who want to maximize their youthful appearance. A good candidate is someone who presents moderate to severe wrinkles around the eyes or forehead that are a result of excessive facial movements or expressions, not due to sun damage. BOTOX® is most effective for treating patients with aesthetic concerns such as crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines. Additional factors include not being a smoker and being in good physical health. Your doctor will do a full evaluation during your consultation to see if you’re a suitable candidate for BOTOX®.
Who is a Good Candidate for Fillers?
Men who have lines where their brows furrow, at the corners of their mouth, around the eyes or across the forehead are excellent candidates for facial filler. Patients should be in good overall health with no underlying or preexisting conditions. Suitable candidates should also be non-smokers. During your consultation your doctor will do a full evaluation to see if dermal fillers are right for you.
