Male Plastic Surgery Los Angeles offers many non-surgical face improvements including dermal fillers for men who want a youthful yet more masculine appearance.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Botox Injections are not the only non-surgical facial treatments for me.  Dermal fillers are injectable gels consisting of both naturally occurring and synthetic substances. One of the most common compounds is hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in the body’s fluids and tissues. Dermal fillers can be used to reduce the appearance of unwanted lines and wrinkles, increase volume in the lips and cheeks, diminish scars, restore hollow under-eyes, or lift brows.

How Do Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers should not be confused with other injectable drugs such as BOTOX®. Instead of freezing the muscles in the face to reduce wrinkles, fillers help smooth the skin using a soft gel. This material is injected underneath areas of collapsed skin using a needle to “fill” folds, replenish lost volume, and contour the face.

There are different categories of fillers, each with varying formulas:

Restylane

Restylane is a hyaluronic acid-based filler that’s best used to smooth wrinkles or reshape facial contours in male patients. The most common areas for treatment are the lines between the eyebrows and the folds from the root of the nose to the angle of the mouth. With its unique ability to bind with water, Restylane offers the benefit of longer-lasting results.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a synthetic filler designed to treat deep facial folds, wrinkles, and hollowness in the mid to lower areas of the face. It can also be used on the hands or to hide veins. In addition, Radiesse stimulates the body’s natural collagen supply which lessens as we age. When the injectable is administered, this filler formula lifts the skin and eliminates wrinkles.

Sculptra

Sculptra® counteracts lipoatrophy, a condition that results in the loss of fat beneath the skin. Sculptra® is injected underneath the deepest parts of the skin and can reverse volume loss in the cheeks, and under the eyes and fill in other indentations. It can also be used to smooth out wrinkles and stimulate the body’s natural collagen production.

Voluma

Voluma is a hyaluronic-based filler made from long chains of fibers that occur naturally in the skin. It consists of water, anesthetic, and hyaluronic acid, creating a gel-like material. Voluma is best used to give the cheeks a fuller, more plump appearance.

Juvederm Ultra

Juvederm Ultra is a hyaluronic filler, like Voluma, however, it is primarily used to treat the lips. Juvederm contains lidocaine, a common local anesthetic, contained within it already, so an applied numbing agent is not necessary. Juvederm Ultra primarily treats facial wrinkles and increases lip fullness.

Volbella

Volbella is a hyaluronic-based filler. The primary difference between Voluma and Volbella is that Volbella is made of thin material, unlike Voluma which is very thick. This thinness allows for small, precise applications. Volbella is the best dermal filler for filling the skin under the eyes, and can also perfect lip lines.

Vollure

Vollure is made of hyaluronic acid, although it contains much less of this compound than its counterparts. The gel is slightly different and somewhat more malleable than other materials. Vollure is primarily used to keep the soft tissues of the face plump. It smoothes out wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth.

Dysport

Dysport works differently than dermal fillers as it is a BOTOX® treatment. Instead of injecting material into collapsed areas underneath the skin, Dysport temporarily stops certain facial muscles from moving. This forced relaxation reduces the appearance of forehead lines. The skin responds quickly to the treatment, and you’ll likely see a difference within just a few days.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Fillers?

Men who have lines where their brows furrow, at the corners of their mouth, around the eyes, or across the forehead are excellent candidates for facial filler. Patients should be in good overall health with no underlying or preexisting conditions. Suitable candidates should also be non-smokers. During your consultation, your doctor will do a full evaluation to see if dermal fillers are right for you.
