What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction for men is not a method of weight loss. Rather, liposuction is used in patients who have undesirable pockets of fat that have not been reduced from traditional diet and exercise. These trouble spots, if left untreated, can cause areas of the body to look disproportionate and hinder a man’s self-esteem. During liposuction, these stubborn fat deposits are removed entirely, revealing the body’s natural contours and shape.
How Does Male Liposuction Work?
Male Plastic Surgery Los Angeles offers two types of male liposuction. The first is known as a suction-assisted lipectomy, or SAL for short. As its name suggests, during this method, the plastic surgeon will insert a cannula or small tube through an incision. Using a gentle back and forth motion, the fat cells are broken up and suctioned out through a vacuum-like device.
Another process for male liposuction is ultrasonic-assisted lipectomy. Unlike SAL, the UAL procedure uses an ultrasound probe to deliver vibrations that in turn, break up the accumulated fat cells. This causes the fat to melt or liquefy, making it easier to extract the cells through the cannula.
Before either of these procedures can begin, your surgeon will administer an injection—a diluted solution containing saline, local anesthetic and epinephrine. This helps limit the amount of blood loss or bruising as a result of surgery. Male liposuction can take as little as 1 hour and as long as 5 to complete. This will depend on the amount of fat present that the patient has, in addition to the number of treatment areas.

What Is The Recovery Time for Male Liposuction?
Following surgery, patients will be sent home with abdominal drains in place. This is to keep excess fluid from settling under the skin, in addition to reducing swelling. Typically, the drains are removed a week after surgery. Patients will also receive compression garments to wear during the healing process and antibiotics. It can take three full months for the swelling to completely dissipate and for the final results to be revealed. Patients can return to work after one week.
Who Is A Good Candidate For Liposuction?
The best candidates for liposuction are adult men who have fat deposits that are unresponsive to diet and exercise. Prospective patients should be within 25% to 30% of their goal weight, with skin that still retains elasticity and good muscle tone. Males who wish to undergo liposuction should also be non-smokers and physically healthy. It’s also important to note that if a patient is very lean, liposuction may not be an option. Always consult a board-certified plastic surgeon.
